Coventry & Warwickshire's Fashion & Textile Creative Network Event - Date & Guest Speaker Announcement
Join us on Friday February 9th at 10.30am - 12.30pm. At The Daimler Powerhouse in Coventry.
We are looking forward to welcoming you all back for our first Network Event of 2024, and are excited to announce Textile Artist Julia O'Connell will be our guest speaker on February 9th.
Julia is an award winning, Coventry based textile artist who works with both the public and private sector on commissions or as an artist in residence. Her practice explores the shared experiences that bring us together as a community; such as family, home, work and place. She also teaches textile techniques such as quilting, English paper piercing and hand stitching, promoting how stitching can aid good mental health and self care. Julia also regularly delivers talks and presentations about her practice in higher education and community settings.
We had the pleasure of working with Julia on the coat for Godiva Awakes, a project by Imagineer Productions for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, where she led a team of 6 artists to hand stitch and elaborately decorate the coat with print, embroidery and applique techniques. The Coat can be seen, worn by Godiva, at the Daimler Powerhouse in Coventry.
Since then, Julia has worked on a number of projects from exploring textiles in performance with ‘The Visible Maker’ where sewing meets theatre, to growing her own Indigo plants in Coventry to create ‘My Coventry Indigo’ a project looking at how Coventry has been famous for its ‘Blue’ colour since Medieval times.
She is a follower of the ‘Slow’ movement, meaning she is passionate and committed to using mostly gifted, found or home dyed fabrics and materials. With an emphasis on producing textile pieces with little or zero waste, Julia works sustainably by utilising upcycled, recycled, reused and vintage materials whenever possible.
Julia will be chatting to us about her amazingly creative career and demonstrating some of her artistic techniques.
